Where to stay near Marcillac-Vallon?

Marcillac-Vallon is a small red sandstone town in the middle of the vineyard that shares its name: people come for the wine cellars, the Sunday market and the winegrowers' festival at Whitsun. The town has B&Bs, gîtes and hotels, and the countryside around it offers other options. We live in Pruines, 10 minutes from Marcillac-Vallon (about 12 km), where we rent out Gîte de la Viguerie. Here is what we suggest, depending on how you travel.

Our tip: come for the Saint-Bourrou

You will not find a Saint Bourrou in the church calendar: in Occitan, the bourrou (or borron) is the bud of the vine. The people of the Vallon turned it into their patron saint, and its feast became the festival of the Marcillac winegrowers, held over the three days of the Whitsun weekend. On Monday morning a parade crosses the town: at its head, a Mansois vine stock pruned into a crown, followed by children in traditional Rouergue dress, winegrowers with a sprig of vine in their buttonhole and the Échansonnerie de Saint-Bourrou in red tunics. The procession then walks up to the Notre-Dame de Foncourrieu chapel, where the priest blesses the buds during an open-air mass. A little higher up, at Cachefais, the brotherhood inducts its new members, who swear loyalty to the Mansois grape, and it all ends with a glass of Marcillac. The festival is listed in France's inventory of intangible cultural heritage. If you are aiming for that weekend, book your accommodation early.
