Where to stay near Conques?
Conques is a small medieval village clinging to its hillside: there are few places to stay and they book up fast in season. Many visitors therefore stay in the surrounding area and come to Conques in the morning or evening. We live in Pruines, 15 minutes from Conques (about 11 km along the Dourdou valley), where we rent out Gîte de la Viguerie. Here is our honest advice to help you choose.
In short
- One night on foot on the Way of St James (GR65): stay in Conques itself (the abbey's pilgrim hostel, pilgrim gîtes, village hotels).
- A stay of several days by car: stay in the quiet countryside around Conques and explore Conques, Marcillac-Vallon, Rodez, Bozouls or the Aubrac.
- As a couple, somewhere quiet, with a pool: our cottage in Pruines, a self-contained house for two with a panoramic pool from June to September, 15 min from Conques.

How we enjoy Conques from the cottage
- In the morning, before 10 am: the village is still quiet. Park at La Salesse and walk up to the Sainte-Foy abbey church and its tympanum.
- In the afternoon: back to the cottage for the pool and a nap facing the valley, or a swim in Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou, 10 min away.
- In the evening: return to Conques once the day visitors have left, for the pilgrims' blessing at the end of mass and, in summer, the Nocturnes, when the tympanum is lit up.
- The following days: the Marcillac-Vallon vineyard, Bozouls canyon, Belcastel or the Musée Soulages in Rodez.
