Three routes, from shortest to longest

The ELSA base in Espalion offers several trips depending on the time and energy you have. From Saint-Côme-d'Olt to Espalion, allow about an hour and a half of gentle paddling. From Espalion to Estaing, the most iconic route, allow about three hours. For the keenest, the full trip from Saint-Côme-d'Olt to Estaing takes about four and a half hours on the water. All three routes run from May to mid-October, with prices depending on the distance chosen: we advise checking directly with the base before your stay, as conditions can change from one season to the next.

What you see from the water

What really sets this trip apart is that you discover the two villages from an angle you never get from the road: Estaing castle and its Gothic bridge, or the calquières of Espalion, seen at water level, without the crowds on the banks at peak times. The Lot is also home to discreet but very real wildlife: herons standing motionless at the water's edge, sometimes an otter if you have the patience to paddle quietly. We particularly like the stretch between Espalion and Estaing, which alternates calm sections and small riffles without ever becoming technical.

Our advice: don't plan anything else that day

A three- to four-hour trip on the water, plus the time to launch, get picked up and return to the starting point, easily fills half a day, sometimes a whole day for the full route. We advise against adding a full visit of Estaing or Espalion on the same day: better to devote one day to the river and keep another day of your stay for the two villages, which you will then have time to really explore on foot. Bring sun cream, a hat and quick-drying clothes: even in high summer, you almost always get a little wet getting in or out.

We always keep an eye on the river's level and current, which vary with the season, before setting off, and we recommend you do the same: ask the rental base for advice on the day, as conditions can change quickly after a spell of rain.
